Jennifer's Body
(Karyn Kusama): Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, Adam Brody, Johnny Simmons
Running time: 102 minutes
Rating: 2/5(16)
Jennifer (Megan Fox) is a slutty schoolgirl who doubles as a demon succubus. She terrorises a small town by seducing its young fellas and then gorging on their guts. Her best friend, nerdy Anita (Amanda Seyfried), figures something is up and tries to stop her.
The plot plays out like a high school horror in satanic union with Mean Girls. The pacing is stodgy and there is lots of bizarre, dark humour – the best bit being the rock band Low Shoulder who sell their souls to the devil but who look suspiciously like The Killers.
Jennifer's Body makes a case to suggest Jennifer's killings are as much to do with latent lesbian feelings for her best friend as with demonic possession. Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody has said she wanted to write a feminist horror. Oh right. That explains the lesbian kiss that occurs in the plot for no reason whatsoever and which is filmed in tantalising close-up. And then there's the fact that Jennifer lingers in front of the camera like a teenage boy's fantasy. I'm sure it was dreamed up as a satire but got lost along the way.
