David Kitt
The Nightsaver
Gold Spillin' Records
Rating: 4/5
Since his debut album, Small Moments, Kitt has struggled to put out a record that flows as well with the quiet spontaneity that he had perfected. But this, his sixth, feels like a far better fit than previous efforts. Injecting energy and some sounds which have overflowed from his Spilly Walker guise, along with his trademark voice-against-your-ear vocals, he's probably made his best album. Often with Kitt, there tends to be nice ambience to his sound but a space where serious sparks of emotion should be. You can't really say that of The Nightsaver, which is full of beautifully jaded jaunts blanketed with pleasant beats that occasionally and unexpectedly go off on one. Kitt's albums have rarely truly nailed a sound but somehow this record works. Just goes to show that he can get it right if left to his own devices.
