Commercials director Daniel Barber's feature debut is Destry Rides Again meets Gran Torino. Micheal Caine is an angry old widower in a tough London housing estate who turns vigilante when local punks kick a friend to death. Caine delivers a beautifully nuanced and heartfelt performance but the menacing 'hoodies' he hunts down, using combat expertise from his stint as a marine in Northern Ireland, are never more than caricatures, as are the police, with the exception of Mortimer's caring detective. What might have been a gritty cautionary fable of 'broken Britain' ends up as just another screen bloodbath.
