FORD has developed inflatable rear seat belts which will make their debut in the Explorer model in America next year and will be used in all Ford vehicles in the future. They are designed to spread the force of a crash over an area five times bigger than conventional belts which helps to reduce head, neck and chest injuries by easing pressure and reducing movement in the event of an impact.
The new development combines the the best use of traditional seat belts and air bags as they will deploy over the wearer's torso and shoulder within 40 milliseconds of a crash. They are compatible with children safety car and booster seats.
In research carried out by Ford, 90% of those who tested the belts said they were more comfortable than traditional belts.
A Ford spokesperson said, "Ford's rear inflatable seat belt technology will enhance safety for rear seat passengers of all ages."
