Ikea finally arrived. We could scarcely believe it. Recession or no recession, an estimated 3,000 shoppers hit the Swedish warehouse on its opening day and the popularity of the store with its iconic furniture shows no sign of abating.
Conversation has been grim this year: with the collapse of the economy, the Noah's Ark-like flooding around the country, Thierry Henry's handball that kept us out of the World Cup, and the swine flu pandemic. But we're good at misery.
As predicted, this time around, the recession frightened us into voting in favour of the Lisbon Treaty and a relieved Brian Cowen can show his face in Europe. We would have voted for Jedward in X-Factor – if we had the choice.
At last, some good news. Ireland, captained by Brian O' Driscoll and coached by Declan Kidney, won the Six Nations Grand Slam for the first time since 1948. They beat Wales in a nerve-wracking game that ended 17-15 in Ireland's favour.
