Predictions of a technological doomsday once the clock struck midnight on millennium eve caused worldwide panic. Billions were spent defending against this catastrophic bug that could cause planes to fall from the sky and computer networks to fail. It didn't.

Some Dutch TV genius with an Orwellian fixation decided that we would want to watch strangers who are forced to live together for up to three months, prevented from contact with the outside world and filmed 24/7. We were enthralled.


We were listening to… coldplay's 'parachutes'


Little did we know that this breakthrough album in 2001 would cultivate a Gwyneth Paltrow marrying, tee-totalling, pontificating and slightly annoyingly superstar called Chris Martin. We loved him in the 'Yellow' video. We didn't when he started writing on himself.


We were winning… olympic medals


Pride of Cobh, Sonia O'Sullivan gave Ireland something to cheer about at the beginning of the new millennium when she won a silver medal in the women's 5,000m at the Olympics in Sydney, narrowly beaten for gold by Gabriela Szabo.
