Sunday Tribune photographer Mark Condren has been awarded the prestigious AIB Photojournalist of the Year award for 2009.

Condren (31) from Castletownroche, Co Cork, was named as the country's top photographer at a ceremony in Dublin on Friday night.

Some 130 photographers entered 2,000 images and the judging panel praised Condren's submission, saying: "The photographs are strong on all aspects of the craft but crucially also manage to tell the story and give the news with an eye to creating something different and lasting".

Sunday Tribune editor Nóirín Hegarty said: "It is fantastic to see Mark's efforts rewarded in this way. He takes consistently brilliant photographs each week and his images really help to tell the story to our readers. It is a great honour for both himself and the Sunday Tribune."

Condren said: "I would like to thank the judging panel for this very prestigious award. It is humbling to be named as photographer of the year when you consider some of the great images taken by my peers. I am truly honoured."
