Dubliner Gareth MacHale and co-driver Brian Murphy held the lead after the first day of the Safety Direct Galway International Rally. Kilkenny's Craig Breen was their closest challenger. Keith Cronin from Bantry was quickest on the opening stage but slid off the road at the end of stage two.
