Hull City stunned Manchester City with a 2-1 win at the KC Stadium and climbed out of the relegation zone in the process.
Phil Brown's side had not won since November but deservedly took a 31st-minute lead through the impressive Jozy Altidore. City then found themselves two down nine minutes after the break thanks to a rocket from George Boateng and, although Emmanuel Adebayor pulled one back, they rarely threatened to equalise.
Stoke eased to a 3-0 triumph over Blackburn Rovers with Danny Higginbotham producing the finish of a striker when he sent a first-time volley past Paul Robinson to open the scoring.
Mamady Sidibe then made it 2-0 in first-half stoppage time after prodding home a cross from Matthew Etherington. Stoke kept up the momentum after the restart and almost made it 3-0 in the 55th minute through Ryan Shawcross, who drew a spectacular diving save out of Paul Robinson.
Life got even more difficult for the visitors four minutes later as they were reduced to 10 men with Christopher Samba given his marching orders. Etherington then wrapped up the win when he played a one-two with Liam Lawrence, and slotted the ball in.
Kenwyne Jones came to Sunderland's rescue as they staged a second-half fightback to draw 1-1 with Wigan Athletic. He headed home after 64 minutes to ease the growing unrest on Wearside after Jordan Henderson picked out the powerful striker.
Wigan actually provided the first blow at the Stadium of Light when Hugo Rodallega robbed Lorik Cana, the ball ran to Mohamed Diame and he smashed an unstoppable shot high into the net.
Burnley picked up a crucial win as they edged to a 2-1 victory over West Ham United to hand Brian Laws his first win as Clarets boss. Danny Fox, who recently joined from Celtic, was the star of the show as he provided the assist for the first goal and then sealed the victory with a stunning second-half free-kick. Dave Nugent opened the scoring for the hosts when he got on the end of a long ball from Fox to deliver a perfectly weighted lob over the advancing Robert Green.
Burnley increased their lead on 55 minutes when Fox curled home a delicious set-piece, while Araujo Ilan scored late on for the visitors.
Meanwhile, Kevin Davies had a late winner disallowed as Bolton Wanderers settled for a 0-0 draw with Fulham. The Trotters captain saw his last-minute header ruled out for a push in a dramatic end to a dreary encounter.
Bolton's best chance of the game arrived when Mark Davies teed up a volley for Tamir Cohen, but the Israeli sliced over. Matt Taylor then picked Sam Ricketts out and the full-back's header looked to be on its way in until Mark Schwarzer pulled off a fine save.
